email that I got said:

Fifty Years of Math 1959-2009 (in the USA )

Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl took my $ 2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters , but she hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and cried. Why do I tell you this? Because of the evolution in teaching math since the 1950s:

1. Teaching Math In 1950s

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit ?

2. Teaching Math In 1960s

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

3. Teaching Math In 1970s

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80. Did he make a profit?

4. Teaching Math In 1980s

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

5. Teaching Math In 1990s

A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no wrong answers, and if you feel like crying, it's ok.)

6. Teaching Math In 2009

Un hachero vende una carretada de maderapara $100. El costo de la producciones es $80. Cuanto dinero ha hecho?

Cars and $Money$

I recently ran over a screw which resulted in a flat.  While I was at the shop to get it fixed, I also asked them to check the brakes (thinking of the next few months and that good brakes would be a good thing).  Well they fixed the flat (didn't actually charge me for it) and gave me the results of the brake inspection (again no charge).
Rear wheel cylinder blown
Right front berrings play
Rear drum out of round?
??? O2G to cut front.???
Uneven inside edge wear
fronts on wear bars are also inside edge wear
and the repair estimates are:
front pads $70
front rotors $60
rear cyl. $16
labor $129
then the suggested/additional stuff
new front tires
I was also told that there was a leak somewhere (small leak) with the brake fluid!!!

OMG - they're not trying to scare me into anything shisty are they?  Not just because I'm a female.  Also they wanted to sell me the "Euro Tire" because they don't want to carry it in their stock anymore (but it comes with this nifty 3 year warrenty -replace it no matter what- Replace it with what? another Euro, THAT YOU AREN'T CARRYING IN STOCK ANYMORE or with a different one?)

So a grand total would be $424.22 then the additional for the tires.  Grr.   I think I'll take it to my mechanic and see what he has to say about it, after Turkey Day.

Cesar Millan

I so very much wanted to go see him at Benaroya Hall on Nov. 4th; but the cheapest tickets that I can find are $60.  I really wanted to go to see if there was anything other than what his book said, so that I could really work with Sasha, and keep her from getting in fights with Nisha (which usually winds up with one of them and one of us bleeding).

happiness

A term that can be used for many various things as we are all different.  An absolutely wonderful Aunt of mine said something along the lines of "take care of yourself first then look for other things to assist you"  basically eat the right foods, exercise, sleep, etc. and if that doesn't give you what you're looking for for yourself, then try other things like talking to your Dr. about it.
Part of my taking care of myself is taking care of my family and those I love.  So why not do things that I know would make my sister happy?  Why not take on taking the girls and dog(s) for walks?  Etc., etc., etc...
I'll also be making a weekly list of goals that I will "do" everything I can to see to it that that list is done.
Cheers

Freakish dreams...sometimes a nightmare.

So I had this freakish nightmare last night.
I wake up to hearing my 2yr old crying and going down the hallway.  I find her in the pantry closet with the light on and the door closed.  I open the door and she says "poopy".  We go to her room and change the diaper (little bit poopy) and I put her back to bed.  And then I go back to bed, thinking that I'll now call Je "Current".
